By one company's measure, Alabama's River City is the second best place to work in manufacturing in the U.S. According to smartasset, Decatur made the list because 27.41% of the workforce is employed in manufacturing, and unemployment is at around 2.4%.
The financial technology company placed the north Alabama city only behind Ames, Iowa in a breakdown of where manufacturing sectors are still thriving in the U.S.
The survey compared 378 metropolitan areas, looking at manufacturing as a percentage of the workforce, as well as job and income growth over the last three years, housing costs and the local unemployment rate. According to SmartAsset, Decatur made the list because more than a quarter of the workforce - 27.41% is employed in manufacturing, and unemployment is at around 2.4%.
“While income growth for manufacturing workers has lagged between 2019 and 2020, employment numbers are up with a 9% growth over the same one-year time period and nearly 15% between 2017 and 2020,” the survey said.
