A fellow student alerted a teacher, who brought the student with the firearm to the office...
Schertz Police Chief Jim Lowery, shown at a press conference Dec. 8, said his department will work with the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office to decide if anyone should face charges for a loaded handgun brought to an elementary school by an 8-year-old student Tuesday.Just before noon Tuesday, a student at Rose Garden Elementary School in Schertz reported that another student, an 8-year-old, had shown him a handgun wrapped in an article of clothing.
The gun turned out to be loaded and the child also had two knives, according to a statement that afternoon by the Schertz Police Department and a letter sent to parents by the school’s principal, Sarah Reed. The student who had seen the gun told a nearby teacher, and the teacher immediately took the student with the firearm to the school’s office, where it was secured by school resource officers who arrived within minutes, the police statement said.“This is a very scary situation, and we are thankful that nothing tragic happened,” wrote Reed in her letter to parents. “We commend the student for immediately reporting this information to school personnel.
Schertz police continue to investigate and will work with the Bexar County’s District Attorney’s office to determine if charges should be filed, the statement said.
