ANALYSIS: Things just went from bad to worse for Western Australia’s opposition — here’s what might happen next
abc.net.au/news/wa-politics-analysis-where-to-for-liberal-national-opposition-/101903682In the span of just under five hours, Western Australia's politics underwent its most seismic shift since the election bloodbath nearly two years ago.To even those within the Nationals, Mia Davies's decision to step aside as party and opposition leader was a shock.
It was a move that had been spoken about behind closed doors since she decided not to contest the leadership after the 2021 election.Whenever Ms Mettam wanted the top job, it would be hers, many Liberal colleagues said. The timing of her move raises questions about whether she might see it as her chance to not only take over her party's leadership but also reshape the opposition too.
As the 2025 election looms closer though, both parties were facing difficult decisions about how they will work together. It has raised questions about whether it would have greater success partnering with the Liberals and running as a combined team, to give the Nationals a greater chance at winning more seats. The Liberals taking the leadership of the Coalition — while giving undertakings about allocations of positions and portfolios in future parliaments and potentially in government — is one idea often discussed.
