MONTREAL, Aug 31 — A group of Indigenous women are hoping to stop the bulldozers at a former Montreal hospital which they believe could hold the truth about children still...

Mohawk Mother Kwetiio looks through a fence at the Royal Victoria Hospital construction site on July 17, 2024, in Montreal . Bulldozers are back at work at Montreal 's former Royal Victoria Hospital, but a group of Mohawk mothers have not given up their fight to excavate the site in search of remains of children who went missing some 60 years ago.

Anthropologist Philippe Blouin, Mohawk Mothers Kahentinetha and Kwetiio pose in front of the Henry William Morgan Pool at Allen Memorial Institute on July 17, 2024, in Montreal. — AFP pic During the Cold War, the programme aimed to develop procedures and drugs to effectively brainwash people. Fellow activist Kwetiio, 52, who also uses just one name, said they insisted on arguing the case themselves without lawyers, “because in our ways, no one speaks for us.”

The Mohawk mothers accuse the university and the government infrastructure agency of breaching an agreement by selecting the archaeologists who did the search and then ending their work too soon. Between 1831 and 1996, some 150,000 Indigenous children were taken from their homes and placed in 139 such schools. Several thousand never returned to their communities.
