A former foreign minister has condemned the use of scare campaigns during the COVID-19 pandemic, saying 'the only science they were following was political science.'
Former foreign minister Alexander Downer spoke to Sky News Australia’s Chris Kenny about leaked WhatsApp messages involving UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock, which reveal Mr Hancock wanting to “scare the pants off everyone” and asking"When do we deploy the new variant."
“The government realized that politically it was to its advantage to scare people and to encourage people to comply with lockdowns,” Mr Downer said. Mr Downer said one of the things revealed in the leaks was the existence of a “nudge unit” within the British cabinet office, which he claimed to know a bit about.“What this nudge unit is used for is to encourage the public to do certain things. To influence public behaviour.”
