These chain-stitched, Texas-made coats were inspired by El Paso
Austin-based Molly Dery's Molyan chain-stitched coats were inspired by far West Texas mountain sunrises and sunsets in El Paso where she grew up.To glean inspiration for her small-batch, eponymous jacket line that launched this year, Austin-based Molly Dery looked to home.
“It’s a totally different time zone,” Dery says, describing the unique juxtaposition of her hometown’s desert skies with colorful houses in border city Juárez that informed the geometric patterns on the back of her modern-day chore coats.Dery employs chain stitching, a technical component that can achieve richness in unexpected, unusual color combinations one might spot at dusk. Terra cotta plays against lilac; lime-green contrasts with cerulean.
Locating a chain stitcher in Texas proved challenging, says Dery. The technique is more common in the western United States. Marrying electric machinery with the use of a hand crank, chain stitching is a skill Dery describes almost like a lost art. Ultimately, she found a female chain stitcher in Lockhart to finish the 100 percent duct canvas cotton jackets that are first hand-sewn by a woman in San Antonio.
“When you’re walking down the street … you can kind of feel like it’s a superhero cape,” she says. “From the front, it’s subtle, in the back, it’s really promoting your individuality.”
