'If we can bail out large corporations, we can make sure that everyone in this country has enough income to pay for the basic necessities of life,' Senator Bernie Sanders said.

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to devastate the U.S. economy, many lawmakers are advocating for monthly $2,000 payments to help Americans stay on their feet.

Since then, Sanders teamed up with Senators Kamala Harris and Ed Markey to introduce legislation that would provide such monthly payments to every individual who earns less than $120,000 annually. The checks would arrive each month throughout the pandemic and in the three months after the crisis comes to an end.

In the House, Representatives Ro Khanna and Tim Ryan introduced legislation in April calling for $2,000 for every American over 16, for up to one year. The bill has 18 Democratic co-sponsors, 10 of whom signed on after it was introduced.
