The 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings has been released – with one South African University in the top 200.
Four universities in Gauteng and the Western Cape have ranked in the top 500 universities in the world on the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
The rankings are based on Times Higher Education’s new WUR 3.0 methodology, which includes performance indicators that calculate a university’s performance across five areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook:The University of Cape Town was ranked the best university in Africa, placing 167th.
“The deep disciplinary expertise, together with the great and rapid growing interdisciplinary work across our academic departments, and the geographical advantage of our location, all allow us to make valuable contributions to knowledge that has an impact on our continent and beyond – contributing to the growth of African and global knowledge.”

South African Deputy Minister's Bodyguard Killed in Mass ShootingWarrant Officer Lindela Mraqisa, a close protector to Deputy Minister of Police Cassel Mathale since 2019 and a member of the Western Cape's Protection and Security Service (PSS) division, was among the five people killed in a mass shooting in Gugulethu, Cape Town. Police have mobilized maximum resources to track down and apprehend the perpetrators of the attack. Deputy Minister Mathale described the late officer as dedicated, humble, and hardworking. He expressed his concern over the number of police officers killed on and off duty, and urged society and the government to work together to combat this scourge. He also praised Mraqisa's professionalism and punctuality and offered his condolences to his family. Police Minister Bheki Cele and the national police commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, will visit Cape Town to meet with the investigating team and bereaved family of Warrant Officer Lindela Mraqisa, who was killed in a mass shooting.
