Theresa May is set to resign as Prime Minister as Brexit pressure rises
Speaking outside Number 10 Downing Street May said she regretted being unable to deliver Brexit in an emotional speech. May’s departure also starts a leadership battle for the ruling Conservative Party.
"It is now clear to me that it is in the best interest of the UK for a new PM to lead that effort," said May."I am today announcing that I will resign as Conservative leader on Friday 7 June.” "I will shortly leave the job that it has been the honour of my life to hold." With her voice beginning to crack she finished by saying that she was grateful to"serve the country I love" before turning back towards Number 10.Echoing the demise of Margaret Thatcher, Britain's first female Prime Minister, May has been undone by the anti-European fringe in her own party.
