Hawthorn forward Jack Ginnivan has not been given frees for high contact that he deserves because of what looks like “subconscious bias” by umpires, according to Peter Schwab.

Hawthorn forward Jack Ginnivan has not been given frees for high contact that he deserves because of what looks like “subconscious bias” by umpires, according to ex-Hawthorn coach and former AFL umpiring boss Peter Schwab.

Schwab, who coached the Hawks from 2000 until 2004, worked as list manager at the Brisbane Lions and also worked as director of AFL umpiring in 2017, said: “He just doesn’t get the free kicks he should get. As a former director of umpiring, Schwab said it was easier to not pay frees than to pay them, and he acknowledged there were difficulties for the umpires in making calls.

Schwab said Ginnivan’s propensity to be low to the ground - which makes it harder for the tackler to avoid high contact - was “because he’s a small player”.
