Retired Navy Commodore Peter Scott has written a memoir, ‘Running Deep’, documenting some of the near misses he had in command of a submarine and revealing the mental toll of a life underwater.

Commodore Scott commanded submarines and worked on them for decades before also serving in a senior position in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In an interview with Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell, Commodore Scott spoke of the dangers and thrills of a life under the sea, his struggles with alcoholism and depression and of the “coffin dreams” he used to experience in periods on board a submarine that stretched for months. “There’s some difficult stuff in there but I think at the end of the day, despite the challenges, despite the discomfort, for me it was always a very worthwhile life and it kept me going back for it year on year,” Commodore Scott told Mr Clennell.
