A climate expert weighing in on lightning strikes in KwaZulu-Natal, which have claimed 26 lives in recent months, says lightning conductors are essential to prevent deaths in rural communities.

Engelbrecht, who is also a lead author of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Assessment Report, said the tragedy of lightning related deaths was indicative of how vulnerable people that live in informal housing are, subject to extreme weather events, whether in rural areas or in the cities.Subscribe to News24 for just R75 per month to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
