Shelley Winters chronicles her tumultuous life across two memoirs, with each page jam-packed with love affairs, feuds, friendships, and more than one nervous breakdown.
The two became friends, and Winters claims to have been a role model for Monroe, introducing her to method acting and copying her open mouth style. She also occasionally mocks Monroe, claiming that “her idea of making a salad was to scrub each leaf with a brillo pad.”
Both “hell-bent on culture,” Monroe and Winters would spend every Sunday morning listening to classical records and reading about the composers. Deciding to take agency over their sexuality, they each made lists of men they would like to sleep with. Winters was shocked by some of Monroe’s choices, which included Zero Mostel, Charles Laughton, Albert Einstein—and her future husband Arthur Miller.
But Monroe found a crafty way to fight back. She claimed to have broken her ankle, forcing Preminger to be kind to her, lest he make the sympathetic crew irate. Winters worked tirelessly to create the equitable America her father dreamed of. Throughout her life she was a progressive, feminist, and civil rights advocate. “You’re what we call an ‘emotional Democrat,’” Eleanor Roosevelt once told her. “You’re a little weak on facts, but your heart is in the right place.”
