Winter King makes up for years of Arthur letdowns.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Warning: Spoilers for The Winter King episodes 1-4 below! The Winter King finally gets King Arthur right after 11 years of middling to bad adaptations. King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table is one of the world's most famous myths and has been adapted and reinterpreted a dizzying number of times. On the big screen, there have been fantasy epics , grim and gritty blockbusters and even legendary comedies .
Since the tale has been remixed so many times, it can be tough to come up with a fresh angle on it. In the last decade or so, shows such as Cursed and Camelot have come at the legend from different angles. The former, for instance, made Arthur a secondary character and instead focused on Lady of the Lake Nimue, but while the Netflix show received good reviews for its visuals and Katherine Langford's performance, the execution was found wanting.
This could bode well for Winter King's future, because outside of Merlin - which ran for five seasons - other King Arthur shows tend to receive poor reviews or get canceled early. Cursed was broadly well received, but despite Netflix's hopes for it to become the next big fantasy show, it was canceled after one season. A similar fate befell 2011's Camelot, which was Starz's lusty tale on the myth with a cast that included Eva Green and Jamie Campbell Bower.
Why The Winter King Succeeds Where Recent King Arthur Shows Failed The Winter King has the benefit of being based on a series of great books, and after a decade of mediocre Arthur shows and films, its take on the legend feels refreshing. The series has stripped back on the magical elements, and it mostly feels like a historical drama rather than a fantasy show.
Merlin and The Winter King could scarcely be more different in tone, with the former being more lighthearted and filled with adventure. With its more contained scope and lack of gloss, the series has a different feel than many other takes on Arthur. Whether that translates to the entire book series being adapted or the show lasting beyond its first season is unknown, but after a decade of disappointments, it's nice to have a decent King Arthur show again.
