The Walking Dead: Dead City reveals why Maggie and Negan go to New York. The Walking Dead Universe is set to have a big 2023 and 2024 thanks to a roster of new spinoff shows starring some of the original series’ biggest and most popular characters. This summer, the whole spinoff slate kicks off with The Walking Dead: Dead City, which sends the unlikely duo of Maggie and Negan to a post-apocalyptic Manhattan beset by zombies.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The fun of sending Maggie and Negan to a zombie-infested setting straight out of Escape From New York should be obvious to anyone. But as it turns out, the reason the two characters end up in New York is anything but fun. As revealed in new footage shown to the panel Tuesday at TCA 23, Dead City sees Maggie turning to her old enemy Negan for help when her son Hershel is kidnapped by some new bad guys .
Yes it’s true that Negan started out as an incredibly sadistic and villainous character who only wanted to deliver pain and misery to Maggie and her people. But it’s also true that Negan has a tender spot in his heart for kids, which was revealed through his interactions with Carl, Judith and later Hershel. It was also revealed in TWD season 11 that Negan has his own wife now and his own child, which should only further stoke his paternalistic fires.
But of course the thing that makes Negan a great ally in a fight is not his protective, fatherly side, but the evil and sadistic side that he showed when he first arrived on the Walking Dead scene. As fans remember, Negan’s willingness to do just about anything, no matter how duplicitous and sick, was actually a great asset for the group when Carol dispatched him on his mission to infiltrate the Whisperers and kill Alpha.
