After wrapping up a long career as one of the most successful major league players to come out of Iowa, Jeremy Hellickson is spending the summer playing softball with his high school buddies.
There was one out in the top of the fourth inning when Jordan Loebig stepped to the plate on Monday night.
When Hellickson enters the batter's box, most teams don’t realize they're about to face a 10-year veteran of Major League Baseball. The Station swept Monday's doubleheader. It’s become a theme this summer for a team with a loaded lineup and one of the best secret weapons in slow pitch softball. Hellickson, who made his big-league debut in 2010, spent parts of 10 seasons in the majors with Tampa Bay, Arizona, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington. He appeared in 232 games, including nine games with the Nationals in 2019, earning a World Series ring that was shipped to his Iowa house recently.
"We've kind of been joking about it over the last couple of years about whenever Jeremy retires, we should have him on our slow pitch team," King said."We did not expect him to retire this upcoming season, but since he did it, we invited him. He was really excited and quick to say, 'Yes.'" His teammates love having him. They even put him through some rookie hazing. King has Hellickson hitting in the bottom of the lineup to pay his dues as the lone newcomer on the team. Hellickson, still feeling the effects of his injured shoulder, plays the infield, spending most of his time at second base. He often has to throw sidearm to avoid the pain of bone spurs. When he makes a nice play, his teammates will sometimes tease him with Gold Glove references.
