Treasury secretary Janet Yellen announced that the federal government is running out of money and that if Congress doesn’t raise the debt ceiling by October 18, the United States will have to default on its debt. This announcement came just hours after. This also risks the government defaulting on its debt before the 18th, which Yellen warned was a real possibility.

“This uncertainty underscores the critical importance of not waiting to raise or suspend the debt limit,” Yellen said.by not raising the debt ceiling would send us right back into recession, which we’ve barely left. And the government would be unable to send out Social Security checks and other payments that citizens depend on for survival.

Such ultimatums are a regular form of political theater, but for Americans watching along at home, it’s reached a new level of absurdity and callousness.

People living paycheck to paycheck are expected to constantly troubleshoot their own precarity, stuck in a leaking boat with a Dixie cup, turning any hobbies into side hustles in an effort to stay afloat. And if you’re struggling?
