A regulation tennis court is 78 feet long. Daniil Medvedev plays like it’s 30 feet longer. And at the U.S. Open, his creative geometry has turned him into one of the most dangerous returners in the game.

No matter which legendary tennis court he’s pacing between points, Daniil Medvedev will always look like just another tall man on a stroll. Loping around at 6-foot-6, his shoulders slightly stooped, he wanders far behind the baseline to receive the next serve. Then he keeps going. Right when it looks like he might run out of room, he takes a couple more steps.

By the time he’s ready to receive the serve, he’s a full 20 feet behind the baseline. You could park an ice cream truck in front of him and not leave tire tracks on the lines.
