University of Toronto head soccer coach Ilya Orlov uses an AI-powered camera to record action on the field that he and his team can use for strategizing and training.Spectators of university soccer games might notice a subtle addition on the sidelines these days: the Veo camera. It’s a neon green device that looks a bit like a triangular projector or robot vacuum, usually affixed on a tripod with a tall neck. The camera uses AI to follow and record game action.

During games, the team makes use of Nacsport, another piece of technology, to do real-time “live tagging,” making it easier to organize and review footage later on. “We can tag players based on their positions and the actions that they perform,” Orlov says. “For example, we want to see number 10 pass the ball, or number 10 dribble the ball, or number 10 making defensive actions.

While tools like Catapult are invaluable for determining when players’ bodies are performing at their peak, they often come with hefty price tags that many programs can’t afford. For smaller or less-funded schools, these financial challenges mean relying on older technology or less sophisticated systems, potentially creating an uneven playing field where only well-resourced programs can fully benefit from sports tech advancements.

A positive side effect of this increased camaraderie is a more thrilling game for fans. “‘If there’s not as much of a disparity from the good teams to the not-as-good teams, that’s going to be exciting for any spectator,” he says.
