International visitors flock to the region’s more famous islands, but Favignana remains a locals’ secret.
Speeding down a dirt road, the wind whipping my hair back, I wonder if I am brave enough to fulfil my childhood fantasy and go hands-free. But a sudden jolt from the e-bike beneath reminds me to keep my fingers tight as I travel past fields of flowers, blurs of yellow, purple and pink among dusty clumps of cacti and olive groves.
And, returning four years later in 2023, I find that — despite so much else changing — Favignana still hasn’t.Favignana is the most populated of the three Aegadian islands, which include Levanzo and Marettimo. Lying off the coast of west Sicily they form part of the largest marine reserve in Europe — one of the reasons the beaches here are so downright stunning.
