As a result of an increasingly hostile climate for journalists, the United States has fallen 3 places in this year's world press freedom index to 48th

compiled by Reporters Without Borders found that hatred of journalists has degenerated into violence. The number of countries regarded as safe for journalists has continued to decline while authoritarian regimes have tightened their grip on the media, contributing to a climate of fear. Last Thursday, another high-profile incident occurred when journalist Lyra McKee was shot dead in Derry, Northern Ireland.

Last week's index found that hostility expressed by political leaders towards the media in many countries is inciting frequent acts of violence and fueling unprecedented levels of fear for journalists. In 2019, Norway had the best score for press freedom, followed by Finland and Sweden. Eritrea, North Korea and Turkmenistan occupy the last three places in the ranking.

As a result of Donald Trump's comments about the media which has resulted in an increasingly hostile climate for journalists, the United States has fallen three places in this year's index to 48th. The level of violence used to persecute journalists was brutally highlighted last October by the gruesome murder of columnist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
