It is in our interest to defend democracy as heroically as the troops did in 1944. It is critical that Ukraine’s counteroffensive succeeds.wrote this about the fight: “If Ukraine can drive back an already shaky Russian army, it stands a chance of forcing Moscow to bargain for an end of its failed invasion. But if Ukraine fails, it would be a bitter blow to the country’s weary population and could endanger continued support from some restless NATO members.” The whole world is watching.
The barrage of missile attacks and endless bombings of hospitals and schools should be appalling to any rational observer. This past week featured an explosion that wiped out a dam that provided water to hundreds of thousands of families. It also flooded towns and supply routes that were essential to Ukraine’s battle strategy. The clear message is that there is no empathy coming from the Kremlin. From the start Putin’s invasion has been brutal and relentless.
On the home front, there are indications that some political leaders’ support for Ukraine is less than robust. With the conclusion of a bipartisan deal on the debt ceiling, some House members are retreating to their ideological corners and balking at new support for the war effort. While the U.S. Senate is proceeding with a supplemental funding bill to aid Ukraine at this critical turning point, budget hawks and far-right members of the House are hesitant.
