Roof caves during extra-alarm fire at Englewood church, fire department says
A church has erupted in flames in the Englewood neighborhood on Friday afternoon, according to the fire department.
No injuries have been reported as of 3 p.m. and the extra-alarm blaze, at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 6248 S. Stewart Ave., was still burning according to Chicago Fire Dept. spokesman Larry Langford, who was on the scene. When crews got there, “heavy, dark smoke” was seen, meaning a dangerous fire with possible combustive materials, said Langford.“We had no reports or people trapped,” Langford said.
Firefighters burst into the church to fight the fire but it became too dangerous and as of 3 p.m. they had been evacuated, Langford said.
