The surging popularity of online gambling in international markets has been linked to a significant rise in greyhound track deaths and injuries in NSW.

NSW recorded a significant rise in greyhound track deaths and injuries in the past year as the surging popularity of online gambling in international markets has led to hundreds more races being held.

GWIC said it was “exploring potential reasons for the observed increase in injury in the past 18 months” in its January to March quarterly report. Curved tracks are considered more dangerous than straight tracks, as dogs bunch together. About three-quarters of deaths this year occurred on curved tracks.“Greyhound racetracks are lethal and can’t be made safe,” said CPG NSW director Kylie Field, noting the increase came despite the “so-called safety program”.In response to the figures, GRNSW CEO Rob Macaulay said Richmond had more races than any other track this year. He defended expressing euthanasia and injuries as rates per start.

Racing Minister David Harris said while any death was “distressing and regrettable”, comparing total figures of injuries as the number of races in the industry increases “does not provide an accurate picture”. CPG has accused GRNSW of censoring brutality in the industry for these markets. Race footage posted online is edited to remove injuries and deaths.
