With 100% of the precincts reporting, Tom Steyer won just 0.3% of the total state delegate equivalents, according to the latest figures from the Iowa Democratic party

om Steyer’s campaign spent $14.4 million on television ads in Iowa, more than anyone running for president, according to media tracker Advertising Analytics. All that spending didn’t do Steyer much good. With 100% of the precincts reporting, he won just 0.3% of the total state delegate equivalents, according to thefrom the Iowa Democratic party. At that rate, if Steyer had spent $44.4 million, he would have reached 1%.

That distinction goes to Colorado Senator Michael Bennet, who spent just $1 million but got exactly zero percent of the state delegate equivalents in return. Hawaii Representative Tulsi Gabbard and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg—who spent $195,000 and $475,000 on Iowa TV ads, respectively—received only nominal support, resulting in state delegate equivalent totals that round down to zero.Tom Steyer spent 42% more money on television ads in Iowa markets than any other candidate.

The numbers nonetheless give an indication of who is spending cash most carefully—and who is not. Other than Steyer and the zeroes, Andrew Yang was the most inefficient. He spent $6.7 million on TV ads in Iowa but got just 1% of the state delegate equivalents. Every million dollars, in other words, earned him just 0.2% of the state delegate equivalents. Tough numbers for a guy whose campaign is focused on math.
