When I asked Flanders her views on why it’s important to have more women’s voices in media, she expressed to me, “We sound an alarm. We connect people with each other. We say if in commercial media the job is to deliver the people to the advertisers, I think in the independent media, our job is to deliver the people to each other. So I think in these times, we have to give people some sense of how they can make a difference in the world.
Also honored at the Women’s Media Awards were artist, activist, and philanthropist Lauren Embrey; MIT scientist and activist Joy Buolamwini, who uncovered gender and racial bias in artificial intelligence; Dior’s first female artistic director, Maria Grazia Chiuri; and comedian, actress, and disability advocate Maysoon Zayid.
