The monarch had a lifelong passion for horses.
When Queen Elizabeth’s funeral procession made its way from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey, her carriage was pulled by a horse with no rider. It was an unexpected visual statement: Her coffin, draped in the royal standard, was surrounded by rows of guards and soldiers in uniform. However, immediately in front of her was, well, no one.
Like much of the pomp and circumstance surrounding the monarch’s mourning period, this choice was a purposeful one. The riderless horse—also known as a “Lone Charger”—symbolizes a fallen soldier: Queen Elizabeth was the first female member of the royal family to serve in the military, and held over 50 ranks and appointments in the U.K. and Commonwealth Armed Services during her reign.named Peggy, given to her by her father, King George VI.
Up until the final months of her life, the Queen could be spotted riding them on the grounds of Windsor Castle. Choosing to have a horse with no rider is an image symbolic of not only the monarch, but theHorses aren’t the only animal associated with Queen Elizabeth that are playing a role in the public mourning period and Charles’s subsequent ascension to the throne.
