Just as the emotional anguish of the pandemic will be unevenly distributed, weighing heavier on these communities, the economic ramifications will always hit those at the bottom harder, an injury buried beneath the insult of the rich getting richer.
The faith in it being safe to go outside right now is not so different from the faith that this is a fight we can win and not a crisis we have to survive. While they’re both grounded in a very necessary sense of optimism, they’re also ultimately short-term perspectives. The belief in some kind of final endpoint — either for stay-at-home restrictions or for the pandemic itself — is a balm for anxiety, but one that burns when left on too long.
This is a distinct moment in our history. In all likelihood, there will be an uncountable, innumerable number of “endings,” both those touted by officials eager to prove a point and in the individual daily lives of the billions of people on the planet. But we can’t let any sense of finality dictate what comes next.
