The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live will see Andrew Lincoln’s Rick and Danai Gurira’s Michonne back after the events of The Walking Dead’s series finale. The Rick and Michonne spinoff is part of The Walking Dead’s new strategy of spinoffs set after the main show. The first The Ones Who Live trailer teases Rick’s return, and the show’s title is a perfect callback to some of Rick’s most important moments on The Walking Dead.
"The Ones Who Live" Is A Callback To The Walking Dead Season 5's Rick Line The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live is named after a line that has been used a few times in The Walking Dead by different characters. However, it all traces back to The Walking Dead season 5, when Rick led his group into the unknown community of Alexandria. The Walking Dead season 5’s Alexandria arc highlighted how different Rick and his followers were from this new group of survivors that they had run into.
Rick’s “the ones who live” line, which by itself was a reference to The Walking Dead’s iconic “we are the walking dead” reveal, summarized the character during that particular portion of his life. The Walking Dead season 5 saw Rick at the height of his “survive at any cost” mentality, and the character had crossed many lines to guarantee the survival of his family and group by that point. Rick was right about those at Alexandria not being ready for what was out there.
What "The Ones Who Live" Means For The Rick & Michonne Spinoff Rick’s “we are the ones who live” line was reinvented before the end of the show. The Walking Dead’s series finale featured the “the ones who live” line twice. Both Rick and Michonne said it, although in different contexts. Whereas what Rick said to Deanna in The Walking Dead season 5 served to show strength, The Walking Dead’s final line was more about how special those characters are.
