Milo Ventimiglia joins director Jessica Yu and writer Elan Mastai to break down the emotional ‘This Is Us’ episode where Jack struggles to find his words.
“People joke a lot about the Pearson men and their emotional speeches and we joke about it too in the writers room,” sayswho wrote this episode, arguing that if ever there’s a time to go all in on an emotional speech, it’s your mother’s funeral.
Mastai says he had so much energy the day of shooting the scene, which was filmed on the third day of an eight-day shoot, that he walked the roughly two and a half miles from where he lives to the actual church they were using for their filming location. Sure, he did stop for a muffin and coffee along the way), but, Mastai says he still “arrived on set in a real, heightened state.”
The eulogy monologue was done over about five or six takes. This isn’t uncommon, says the actor, because “usually, the first take or two are the higher emotional takes and then we back off there.” He continues, “Where we kind of land is about right from Jack. It’s almost like I gotta get it out of my system at times.”There isn’t much that can be done, blocking-wise, when it comes to filming a character who is giving a speech at a podium.
It was already a joke among fans that Jack has a bit of a hero complex, so Yu knew not to use too much light and make the character look like Superman—especially because she liked that, in this scene, Jack doesn’t have “the right words to say at every moment.”
