Record temperature combined with an anticipated El Niño could devastate marine life and increase the chances of extreme weather.

Andrew Leising, an oceanographer at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center of the US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration in La Jolla, California, expects to see unusually warm waters in the Pacific off the west coast of the United States during the summer and autumn.

In the lead-up to April’s record ocean temperature, some regions in the Southern Hemisphere experienced marine heatwaves, starting in February, says Huang — among them, waters off Peru’s coast and in the Southern Ocean. Unusually warm waters bring particular stress for corals. Almost all coral regions are currently experiencing remarkably high temperatures, says Matthew England, a physical oceanographer at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. “What we’re seeing now for coral reefs is they’re getting pushed to extreme temps, and they don’t get to regrow because it doesn’t come back to cooler temperatures.
