The Chicago Cubs aren't expected to contend this season, based on projections. Manager David Ross doesn't like that narrative.
Opening day is all about hope, fresh starts and dreaming of what might be possible over a 162-game season.
“It doesn’t matter who you suit up against, every team has as an opportunity to beat you and every team feels like they’re going into the season with a chance to win,” Ross said. “So I don’t want to undersell any one team or oversell one team. We have to go out and play our best brand of baseball. One thing I know about baseball is any team can win any day, and we want to go in and whether it’s in our division or outside of it, we’re going to try to win all of them.
“You look at the Brewers and then also the Cardinals, these are fully formed, mature, very good teams that were both in the playoffs last year, so I think you’d be crazy to look at our division not think they’re the favorites to go back to the playoffs,” president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer told the Tribune. “But that’s why you play the season out.
