Coruscant’s appearance in The Mandalorian season 3 has a much deeper connection to George Lucas and the prequel trilogy, dating back to 1995.
The Mandalorian season 3 brought audiences back to the city-planet of Coruscant, conceptualized for Return of the Jedi and later brought to life in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Despite being the capital of both the Galactic Republic and the Empire, Coruscant hasn’t been explored nearly as much as it was originally supposed to be. With a sparkling city resting atop thousands of sleazy levels built from the surface, Coruscant is host to galactic denizens of all kinds.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Star Wars returned to Coruscant for the first time in the New Republic Era in The Mandalorian season 3, episode 3 “The Convert.” The episode saw the return of Dr. Pershing, who had gone through the New Republic’s amnesty program and was living in the housing provided on Coruscant.
Coruscant May Have Been Important In The Prequels - But Lucas Had So Much More It was revealed in Disney Gallery: The Making of the Mandalorian Season 3 that in 1995, George Lucas had sketches drawn of much more of Coruscant than what was ultimately seen in the prequel trilogy. In fact, production designer Doug Chiang said that he and Lucas had designed the majority of the planet.
It was explained in The Making of The Mandalorian Season 3 that seven settings needed to be developed for the show's latest run, including Coruscant. Even though Chiang had access to Lucas’ designs for Coruscant, the planet is so big he and his team had to select and develop only certain parts of that. Additionally, settings like Amnesty Housing wouldn’t have been included in those sketches, as Lucas likely only drew the planet with the prequels in mind.
While Coruscant wasn’t a major setting throughout the entire season of The Mandalorian, it was critical in telling the end of Dr. Pershing’s story. Using the services of production designers like Chiang to help bring Coruscant back to life was a necessity, as audiences got to see new parts of the planet from someone who had helped Lucas originally create it.
