Writing from Madrid, Spain, DanieMothowagae breaks down the still important ElClasico. From the construction site that is the Bernabéu, speaking to legends & what goes through a player's mind during Real Madrid v Barcelona

Santiago Bernabéu Stadium is a construction site, yet the huge global audience expected for the latest edition of El Clásico will hardly see the behind-the-scenes stuff when Real Madrid host FC Barcelona at the imposing arena tonight.

Beneath the scaffolds in a makeshift compound, the outside broadcast units were already setting up to televise the century-old rivalry between Spain’s two most popular clubs. The daily stadium tours were in full swing and the Real official fan shop was doing a brisk business. In their past two meetings, Barça were the hosts when they lost 3-2 in the Super Cup semifinal in extra time in January, and were also beaten 2-1 in the first-round league clash last October. Both matches were played at Camp Nou.

“You don’t have your mind set on just El Clásico, but there are other things too – without a doubt, there’s a lot of pressure and a lot of responsibility around it. “There is pressure and tension, but once you get on the pitch, you feel calm because of the atmosphere and being surrounded by great players.”Gabon international striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will become the latest African player to feature in El Clásico.

Aubameyang will head into tonight’s game having scored seven goals in 10 appearances in all competitions, including a winner against Galatasaray on Thursday, which sent Barça into the quarterfinals of the Europa League.
