Potential spoilers ahead for Batman: The Long Halloween – The Last Halloween #1Batman: The Long Halloween is getting a sequel, and the preview for the first issue reveals a rather gut-churning twist to the Dark Knight’s classic lore. The Last Halloween aims to close out the story begun in The Long Halloween for good, all in tribute to the original artist, the late Tim Sale.
A Legendary Batman Character Returns for The Long Halloween The History of James Gordon, Jr. The preview for The Last Halloween #1 ends with James Gordon, Jr. being abducted, which presumably will kick off the main story to follow in the 10-issue series. Commissioner Gordon’s son was introduced as an infant in the legendary Batman: Year One by Frank Miller and David Mazzuchelli. After that, James, Jr.
Following that landmark story, James Gordon, Jr. was committed to Arkham Asylum. James, Jr. eventually broke out and became involved in a plot by the Joker against his and Barbara’s mother during Batman: Death of the Family. James, Jr. offers to trade his sister to the Joker for his mother’s life, but he is eventually subdued and apparently falls to his death. It was later revealed that he survived the fall and was recruited into the Suicide Squad. James, Jr.
With such a wild, twisted life ahead of him, it will be interesting to learn if the kidnapping of James Gordon, Jr. in the upcoming Last Halloween will somehow lead the boy down this dark path. He’s not the only one with darkness ahead of him, as the newly-reunited Dent couple seems destined for tragedy.
Loeb and Sale created some of the greatest comics of all time, whether it was their work on Batman stories like The Long Halloween or Dark Victory, Superman for All Seasons, or the “Colors” series the duo produced for Marvel. Sale sadly passed away in 2022, with The Long Halloween Special from the previous year being the last comic book work he produced. Sale’s absence will absolutely be felt, but The Last Halloween should act as a fitting tribute to the legendary artist.
