Former shadow attorney-general Julian Leeser has defended the Liberal Party, after quitting the frontbench over his stance on the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum. MORE: 9News

The former shadow attorney-general said he still supports the Liberal Party but has a difference of opinion on the Voice referendum.

"I felt as a matter of conscience and as a matter of my own ethics - that you've got to stand for something, even if it costs you - that I needed to resign, to take a different position."Instead, it will be campaigning for local and regional bodies in First Nations communities.

The Nationals, the Liberals' junior Coalition partner, had earlier announced their opposition to the Voice.
