Max Deegan fought back from a year out through injury to put himself in Six Nations contention, only for another setback to end his hopes for most Test recognition - and left him on the back foot for World Cup selection

Max Deegan realised he had to get himself dirty to put himself back in the frame for the big games for Leinster - and for an Ireland return.

Deegan did enough to come off the bench for Ireland 'A' against an All Blacks XV last November and then earned his second cap - again off the bench - against Fiji. "There are four back rows in the Ireland squad from Leinster - so if you're beating them in here then you're getting into the Ireland squad, I believe."

"Naturally the way I would have played was out wide, so a lot of the ball skills and footwork come naturally and that's where I felt comfortable playing.
