The Pennsylvania State Game Commission has recently voted for a regressive rule change moving our state away from a humane and safe environment for wild animals and humans.
The commission recently voted to allow increased human contact with wild animals at roadside and petting zoos, creating increased risk to people and animals. The risks include transmission of zoonotic diseases, exposure to bites, scratches and rabies. There are many examples of captive exotic animals injuring or killing humans.
Allowing more public contact with wild animals is “cruel and dangerous,” according to the Humane Society of the United States/Pennsylvania State Director Kristen Tullo. Animals in these exhibits are over-bred, prematurely separated from their mothers and are subjected to rough, excessive handling. “This unnecessary amendment will not only expose citizens to potential injuries but it will relegate countless numbers of animals to a lifetime of suffering and forced human interactions” said Tullo.
