The record shop that Prince visited. The dentist office where the community could find life advice. The bookstore that filled a gap. Here are the stories of Driving Park's Black-owned businesses.

According to Dr. Clayton Hicks, 78, of the Far East Side, who has been operating Driving Park Vision Center in the neighborhood since 1970 and who counted Waiters among his patients, the athlete who died last year So, when things start getting a little bit worse, me and my wife started talking about it. And so we - I told her to look in the newspaper, in the telephone book, to see if she could find a place that sold ice cream machines, and see how much they cost.

People also recall the “down-home cooking” at Don-Nita’s, which Donald Carroll opened with his wife, Juanita, in the 1970s."And so it was a place to eat. I mean it was the place to eat, and I'd have lunch there probably two times a week and then dinner on the weekends. They had fried fish, I mean the fish was off the hook, but it was down-home cooking. I enjoyed the fish."

But eventually I got the building up. I got it operating and we started doing a million dollars a year. If you wanted food as part of your nightlife experience, Club Tropicana was the place to go. If you wanted something sweet, My Mama’s Sweet Potato Pie Company had you covered."Yes, I remember that, and everybody, I mean, you know, it was a peaceful place, and yeah, it was the hangout spot. It would be crowded, and no trouble, and nobody was worried about it, I remember. It was like a nightclub, but you can also get food there and you can dance and just, you know, mingle with people.

Barrett and other residents are also hoping that restaurants will be included in the plan for 134 low-income apartments at an old industrial site across the street from FishBurger. The loss of neighborhood businesses has come with the loss of something more than places to buy goods or services. It's affected the sense of community.

And he would do that while you were in the chair. And so I remember many times when I would be in the chair getting clean, getting a lecture about the sports car and school, and somebody would come up and they would be like, 'Oh, Dr. McKoy, I know I need to get you this but you know, I need to da-da-da' and he would be like, 'No, let's work it out, ba-ba-ba.'

So the instructor was like, it was an English class, just a language, and the professor was like, 'Ok. We just want you to write something - three, four, five pages - something on your hero, a famous hero of yours.' That was the assignment. OK, so my hero was Marcus Garvey. All right. So, what happens is, I go out to the regular bookstores down High Street. 'Hey, y'all got a book on Marcus Garvey?' 'Huh? Try over there.' I go over here.
