Analysis: Inner-city Australia is turning its back on the rest of the country, swinging strongly to the political left
Inner-city Australia is turning its back on the rest of the country, swinging strongly to the political left in traditional Labor and Liberal strongholds and forcing both parties into battles across the nation's suburbs and regional centres.
In Sydney, the left made inroads into the north shore and improved its grip on the inner city while Labor shed tens of thousands of votes in the city's western suburbs. Mr Rawnsley said it was very different for people in manufacturing or retail with question marks over their long-term future. In North Sydney, Liberal Trent Zimmerman suffered a two-party preferred swing against him of up to 10 per cent, with both the Greens and ALP vote lifting sharply on the 2016 election.enjoyed a 6 point lift in his primary vote and now holds the inner-southern Sydney seat with a 17.4 per cent margin.
Economist Roger Wilkins of The University of Melbourne said it was difficult to precisely identify why capital cities were swinging left, but he believed both voters' ages and incomes were playing a role.
