From the deserts of Western Australia to a World Cup on home soil, Lydia Williams has had an incredible football journey — and her impact on the women's game is immense.
crept above her in the pecking order. But she doesn't mind. She knows that this is how it goes.
But the closing of one door always means the opening of another. Williams is using the twilight years of her career to go back to where it started, to learn more about herself and where she came from. Williams learned everything from her dad. He was her connection to her own deep past. She would travel with him to Canberra to take part in corroborees, meet elders, and visit the Tent Embassy. But after he died and Williams's career took her across the world, she began to lose touch with that part of herself.
Amid conversations about an Indigenous Voice to Parliament — the first major recommendation to emerge from the Uluru Statement From The Heart — Williams is acutely aware of the platform she has, particularly during the World Cup, to raise the visibility of First Nations people. "It's an interpretation, the word changes all the time of what's important, what our values are, how it ebbs and flows.
"That's what I think legacy is: the feeling of how you want home to feel like, or high performance, or professionalism. Whatever it is that encapsulates that team or environment.And as she stands on the edge of what could be her final World Cup, Williams says one of her proudest achievements is having watched the women around her blossom on and off the field.Perhaps that, in the end, will be her greatest legacy.
