Williams, the last surviving member of the Temptations, and Shelly Berger, the group’s manager for 56, talk about the enduring appeal of the group that sang classics such as “My Girl&#8…

Otis Williams, the last of the original Temptations, says each time he sees “Ain’t Too Proud,” the Broadway musical based on the lives of the legendary Motown vocal group, it feels as amazing as the first.

Otis Williams is the last surviving original member of the Temptations. He continues to perform with a new version of the group with shows in Beverly Hills and Indio in early 2023. “Ain’t Too Proud,” a Broadway musical based on the Motown group, plays the Ahmanson Theater in Los Angeles from Dec. 13, 2022 to Jan. 1, 2022.

The national touring company of the Temptations musical “Ain’t Too Proud” includes, left to right, Harrell Holmes Jr., Jalen Harris, Harris Matthew, Marcus Paul James, and James T. Lane. The show plays the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles from Dec. 13, 2022 to Jan. 1, 2023. The musical originated at the Berkeley Rep in 2017 and played the Ahmanson in 2018 before arriving on Broadway, where it opened in 2019 and was nominated for 11 Tony Awards including best musical.

“There’s a sit-down in our show that we do,” Williams says. “I talk to the audience, you know, to give them a little inside feeling about Motown. I would tell them the ’60s was the most tumultuous decade within the last 100 years, and through all that, God in his infinite wisdom brought that little two-story family flat together for a reason – Motown Records.

“And now here it is 50 years or so later and he’s still the man,” Williams says. “And never had a contract. We never signed a contract, which is a rarity.”“Sometimes that’s hard to do in business, because it can get kind of murky,” he says. “But we’ve been able to keep the water clear enough so where you can see the bottom.”
