ICYMI: 'That’s Hollywood magic of Alex [Wang] isolating the giraffes and putting them on our set. That was probably the most complicated piecing of VFX stage, scenery and location I’ve worked on.' - John Paino, the show's production designer. 🦒
The article contains major spoilers from The Last of Us season 1 finale. The Last of Us season 1 finale featured a huge moment from the game, in which a real giraffe was brought on set. Episode 9, titled "Look for the Light," brought Joel and Ellie to the end of their mission as the pair reached Salt Lake City, where they finally met up with Marlene and the Firefly scientists that can supposedly find a vaccine to the Cordyceps infection.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Variety recently confirmed with John Paino, the show's production designer, that the giraffe was a real animal. The giraffe, named Nabo, was brought over from The Calgary Zoo in Alberta, where The Last of Us had been filming. Check out how Paino made the scene come to life below:
"I’m sure Alex Wang, visual effects supervisor, could have made a CGI giraffe if we had the time.We needed to see if we could acclimate the giraffe to strangers feeding it, with a very small film crew there. There was the indoor enclosure with a balcony and an outdoor one where the keepers would take care of it. The trainers worked to get them to eat out of a stranger’s hand. So, when Ellie and Joel walk up at the enclosure, that’s the giraffe eating those branches of food.
The giraffe imagery also appears in early episodes of The Last of Us season 1, referencing Ellie's hope for the future. For instance, a stuffed giraffe was seen on the ground when Joel and Ellie leave Boston, marking the end of her childhood with FEDRA. When Joel and Ellie are at Tommy’s commune, a giraffe poster also appears in the teenage bedroom that Ellie stays in. Both giraffes mark pivotal moments for Ellie as she leaves her old life and again when she envisions a normal teenage life.
In The Last of Us finale, as Joel makes his way down the pediatric ward, a giraffe mural can be spotted in the background. This sequence happens before he interrupts the surgeon and takes Ellie, showing how it's Joel's decision that gives Ellie a future. If the surgery had proceeded, Ellie would have died, and while Joel's action may have taken away humanity's chance to overcome the Cordyceps infection, she accepts this.
