The Killers make up for two Houston cancellations with Vegas showmanship, free posters

The Killers printed a"Third time's a charm" poster for its Houston Toyota Center show. The show was twice postponed. At one point during the Killers’ two-hour show at the Toyota Center Sunday night, Brandon Flowers – the band’s blood-drinking, age-resistant frontman – made a mention of a poster. As fans filed out of the venue, each was handed that poster.

By contrast, the Cure’s performance at the same venue two nights earlier was outlandishly generous at three hours. I heard some grumblings by those who only wanted the hits, though they should have known better. The greatest hits fans had to endure a middle third of lovely and expansive guitar workouts and songs that unfolded rather than exploded. The Cure’s show felt impeccably curated with very varied dots from four decades all joined.

Surely a lovely moment in which two Houston youths — Jaden and Bailey, I believe — were welcomed on stage to play bass and drums on"For Reasons Unknown" was premeditated. If so, the band nevertheless plays it off in concert as impromptu and it works as theater, it works for fan connection. With the Killers, we are now 20 years into the arc of a band that took its name from a video New Order made two decades into its career. The Killers opened with its own “Crystal”: “My Own Soul’s Warning,” a newish song that was met not with reservation but rather euphoria.
