… but that's because you're taking more risks trying to assist your teammates to score.To find out, ABC News did a deep-dive into individual player data gathered since the last Women's World Cup in 2019 to identify footballers who will be crucial to their team's success throughout this campaign.In any game of football, the number that matters most is the scoreline — and strikers are the players whose entire job it is to score goals.
By contrast, Jamaican forward Khadija Shaw and Norway's Ada Hegerberg are still among the best goal-scorers but also outperform expectations — they maximise the chances they get in each goal-scoring moment. Two different styles of play produce the same broad outcome: while Hegerberg is a more technical and clinical finisher of chances created by her teammates, Shaw is a more dynamic and self-driven striker who creates more chances with the ball at her own feet.Jamaica's Khadija Shaw, shown here playing for her club side Manchester City, is not afraid to take scoring chances anywhere she finds them on field.
She also isn't afraid of taking on opposition players, using her dribbling skills to ease past defenders and fire a key pass into a dangerous area. South Korean midfielder Ji So-yun is a dynamic presence box-to-box, adept at moving the ball upfield. Her skills are much more aligned with those you'd expect from a central defender: blocks, intercepts, recoveries, and tackles.
Take France captain Wendie Renard. Widely considered one of the greatest centre-backs in history, Renard's individual qualities make her quite different from what you'd expect from a player in that position.French defender Wendie Renard's long-range passes are among the attack-minded skills that set her apart from many other defenders.
Her average passing distance puts her in the middle of the pack for defenders, but that potentially contributes to her high completion rate: she doesn't go for high-risk passes most of the time.While she has a similarly high pass accuracy rating as Kumagai, she also has accuracy over longer distances, with her average passes covering roughly 22.4 metres.
As in the men's game, full-backs have become almost hybrid wingers, moving further up the field to contribute to attacking phases — and even assisting or scoring goals themselves — while still maintaining their defensive responsibilities. Her positional awareness is arguably why she gives away such a low proportion of goals through set pieces like corners, free kicks, and penalties: because she has time to set herself in exactly the right spot to prevent conceding goals.But when you add in the number of shots a goalkeeper faces per game, the picture changes.
If you compare the expected goals generated in a game versus the goals a keeper concedes, Sheridan still comes out near the top.
