The original BART plans seem utopian today.

It’s a Friday afternoon, and you’re ready to call it a week. The thing you want most in the world is a heavy pour of wine, perhaps in a sun-dappled vineyard with a view of the rolling Napa hills. But traffic from San Francisco to Napa is brutal, and you can’t stomach the thought of sitting 90 minutes in Bay Area gridlock. Luckily, there’s. You hop on at a downtown station, and 45 leisurely minutes later, you’re in the heart of Wine Country.

As the name indicates, the Bay Area Rapid Transit system was supposed to serve all nine counties; instead, it has zero stations in Marin, Solano, Napa and Sonoma counties. But in the early 1950s, an exploratory commission was formed to learn the needs of each county and formulate a workable plan for the BART system. It was a time of tremendous growth across the United States. The postwar population was booming and suburbs were expanding, bringing with it a familiar annoyance: traffic.

“All of the Bay Area highway routes are completely inadequate to handle the present traffic volume, let alone projected densities,” agreed the Napa city manager. In December 1952, the city of Napa put up $6,000 for an engineering study that would include “population estimates, traffic origin and destination studies.” The study projected Napa County’s population would explode from 55,800 to upward of 126,000 by 1970 .
