Can Australia's soccer industry use the World Cup momentum to grow the game domestically?

Perched high above the stands in a commentary box, former Matildas star Elissia Carnavas looked down on the sea of spectators with a sense of pride. Ms Carnavas said the increased profile of women's football also meant plenty of good role models for budding players. It found only 41 per cent of change room facilities across the country's 1,920 soccer grounds were female friendly.

There's no doubt young girls are attracted to playing soccer, but former Matildas player Elissia Carnavas questioned whether the sport can keep them.Soccer is expensive, Ms Carnavas said, with some community clubs charging more than $2,000 a year per child.
