The fentanyl crisis is already in Dallas | Opinion
A billboard along Main, Commerce and Elm streets on the outskirts of downtown Dallas warns against the dangers of fentanyl. The city of Dallas has new tools to confront the overdose crisis, write council members Paula Blackmon and Adam Bazaldua. The numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were devastating: “Drug overdose deaths in the U.S. top 100,000 annually,” said a November 2021 news release. Of these deaths, over 75,000 were because of an opioid overdose.
In response, the city has created the Dallas Overdose Response Team. This team has a dedicated full-time paramedic along with a peer support specialist from the Recovery Resource Council to respond to the immediate and short-term needs of people who have overdosed. If we are to combat this epidemic, we must address the public health element.
The strike force is also amplifying efforts around education hubs to educate about fentanyl in schools through student and parent education, as well as through treatment and rehabilitation options for those suffering from drug addiction. Also, among the goals of the strike force is to supply all first responders, city facilities and school staff with Narcan to administer in the event of an overdose.
