Opinion: The endless battle over judicial picks
It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Republicans in the United States Senate blocked an attempt by Senate Democrats to replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein temporarily on the Judiciary Committee while she recuperates from a case of shingles.
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, who himself was absent recently while he recovered from a concussion sustained in a fall, said, “Senate Republicans will not take part in sidelining a temporarily absent colleague off a committee just so Democrats can force through their very worst nominees.”
Liberal activist groups such as Demand Justice and the Take Back the Court Action Fund don’t see it that way. Their view is that the Trump-appointed judges are extreme. Democrats still fume that McConnell refused to schedule confirmation hearings for now-Attorney General Merrick Garland when President Barack Obama nominated him to the Supreme Court shortly before the 2016 election.
In 2016, Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine promised to use the “nuclear option” again to make sure “Republicans’ stonewalling,” otherwise known as the filibuster, didn’t block the confirmation of the next Supreme Court justice, presumably Garland, after the election.
