This 1.3-mile trail near the town of Trinidad circumnavigates the rocky outcropping of Trinidad Head and features striking coastal views.

When friends fly up from the Bay Area to visit me in Humboldt County, my first question is always whether we should drop their luggage at my house before or after we go to Trinidad Head.

Whenever it happens, the Trinidad excursion typically begins with an approach up Scenic Drive, and what an understatement that name turns out to be. This two-lane coastal road winds along dramatic coves, towering sea caves, vibrant tide pools and little-visited beaches before it enters the wind-whipped, cheerful village of Trinidad.

The historic town is mostly a smattering of upscale, midcentury homes perched on a bluff. There are a couple of delicious local seafood spots, including a smokehouse famous for wild salmon, and an 1873 church nearly as old as the town itself. Just west of the town, I park in Trinidad State Beach, where a pre-hike on the vanilla-colored, boulder-strewn shoreline is always in order.

. Villagers called the headland Tsurewa, and the trail is named Tsurai Trail in their honor and managed by the city of Trinidad in consultation with local Native American representatives.
